I'm Sheila R. Misra, CNP and the CEO/Medical Director for Misra Medical.
My family is originally from India (West Bengal and Kerala). I was born in Grants, and I was raised in Gallup (New Mexico).
I was born with clubbed feet. I had major corrective surgery at the age of 11 months, without which I would never have been able to walk. During a trip to India when I was about 8 or 9 years old, I saw a young man "walking" on his hands, because his legs were so twisted from some sort of malady that they were unable to support his weight. I asked my mom what was wrong with him, and she said he was probably born with some sort of medical issue like what I was born with. "But why wasn't he able to have surgery like I was?" This question has followed me my whole life.
I graduated from Gallup High School at the age of 16, and then spent the next 11 years in Nashville, Tennessee. During that time, I completed by bachelors of science degree (in a self-designed interdisciplinary program focused on mind-body medicine), followebed by two years working as a research analyst in diabetes-focused behavioral medical research.
I have been a CNP for 15 years, working in a variety of settings: rural health, outpatient clinic, corrections, active duty military, and with the unhoused population. I have a passion for international health. I have volunteered my services in Uganda and Honduras, and I continue to look for opportunities where I can be of service.
